24 Hours in Geneva, Switzerland

Updated: Mar 3

After my visit to Basel, it was time to go to Geneva. I had just one full day in Geneva, Switzerland so here’s what I got up to…

Geneva and Swiss Alps

I got the bus to La Plagé (the beach) and then walked along the waterfront stopping for photos at the Jet d’Eau – a water fountain that shoots water from Lake Geneva 140m into the air (so cool), and L’Horloge Fleurie – a clock made of flowers which was really pretty. As you cross over the bridge, you get views of the Swiss Alps. The walk along the waterfront is very peaceful and picturesque – there’s lots of photo opportunities.

I then went to a pub for lunch and to google what there was to do in the area. It was then pouring with rain so I ended up going back to my hostel to watch a film.

Even though it was a relatively disappointing day in Geneva, the views I had seen were beautiful and had the weather not taken a turn for the worse, I probably would have explored more.

Where to stay

I stayed in the Meininger Hotel/Hostel. It was really comfortable, clean, modern and spacious. I stayed in a 4-bed female only dorm room (which was HUGE) with an en suite bathroom – it cost me £115 for 2 nights – a little pricey but it’s Switzerland so it’s kind of a given. It was also one of the only hostels I stayed at (during my whole 2 month trip) that had kitchen facilities.

Geneva Card

Thankfully, just like in Basel, hotels/hostels give each guest a free transport card. This allows your free transport on buses, trains and boats for the duration of your stay. You’ll be sent a digital card prior to your arrival by your accommodation. These cards a very handy for those looking to save on their budget while travelling – transport can eat away a large chunk of your money before you’ve even started exploring.

I’ll be honest… I didn’t really like Geneva. The transport system was a bit confusing and I didn’t feel like there was an awful lot to do within Geneva without spending a lot of money. If I had had more time, I probably would have gone to CERN to geek out or got the train to towns/cities further away. Geneva sits on the border to France so you could even go on day trips to places like Chamonix in France. I wish I had researched Geneva more but a lot of activities cost more money than I was willing to spend so early in my trip.
