France: Saint Malo is a gem!

Updated: Mar 17

France is a lovely travel destination. While most travel to Paris, wine country, the Alps or the stunning beaches of the south coast, there is a gem that not many have heard of, Saint Malo.

Located in the North-West of France on the shores of Granville Bay, Saint Malo is a beautiful walled city. With plenty of history and picturesque streets, this little gem is buzzing with cafés, restaurants, and boutique shops. Only 1.5 hours by ferry from Jersey, I’ve been lucky enough to go to Saint Malo many times and it makes for a perfect day trip or weekend break.

Where to eat

There are so many places to eat in Saint Malo! A couple of recommendations from my family and I would be Le Pirate (amazing sweet and savoury crepes) and La Castello (moules and frites, steak and pizza).

5 Things to do in Saint Malo

#1 Micro Zoo

In all the times I have been to Saint Malo, I never knew there was a zoo inside the rampart walls! It costs €12 per adult to enter. There are small enclosures along one side. There are most reptiles and fish in the enclosures. There are also a few birds (in a bigger enclosure) and a dwarf crocodile. Along the walkway, there are displays of insects which are weird but pretty cool to look at.

#2 Spanish Galleon Ship

Just outside the Saint Malo walls, is a replica Spanish Galleon. While in port, it offers a great insight to these magnificent ships. With plenty of information about the history of the galleons and what they were used for, it is really interesting! Highly recommend!

#3 Ramparts

The ramparts (or walls) of Saint Malo offer great photo opportunities. There is a lot of history in and around Saint Malo. Even if you aren’t interested in the history, the views of the city, the ocean, the beaches etc are so worth walking the ramparts.

#4 Grand Aquarium

Le Grande Aquarium is one of my favourite aquariums I have ever visited. I have been several times and it never gets old. With beautifully displayed exhibits and marine life, you will not be disappointed. One of my favourite spots in the aquarium is the shark exhibit (obviously). There is a 360° tank with an area to just sit and relax while the sharks and rays swim around you – it’s so peaceful and calming. The aquarium also has a couple of cool rides – they have a submarine ride and a simulator. Definitely a great day out! You can get the bus from Saint Malo to the aquarium. Entry to the aquarium is currently €18 per adult.

#5 Shopping

Within the walls of Saint Malo, there are plenty of little boutiques and market stalls. Outside of the walls, you still have plenty of boutiques and market stalls. Further out you have the super marché, Le Madeleine – this is ideal if you are heading to the aquarium as they are pretty much opposite each other. You can get the same bus here as you would the aquarium.

Saint Malo makes for a great day trip or overnight stay from the Channel Islands. You really have to experience it yourself! Bon voyage!
