Fraser Island

Updated: Mar 17

Another adventure, another early start. There were around 30 of us doing the Pippies Tagalong Tour to Fraser Island, a 2-night 3-day tour. We gathered at the picnic tables at Pippies Beachhouse to meet our guide, Jamie, before being split into groups and shown to our 4x4 cars. We were in Car 3.

We set off from the hostel to get the car ferry over to Fraser Island. A few mechanical problems with Car 4 changed the plan of the day. We headed off first to Lake Wabby. It’s around a 45 minute walk/hike to the lake, look out of goannas and other wildlife on your way there and back. We were treated to a goanna walking across the path in front of us on our walk back to the cars. We also saw a dingo while we waited for the rest of the group at the cars. We then stopped by the SS Maheno Wreck for photos before heading to our camp. We spent the afternoon getting to know each other before having a delicious dinner. The evening was spent eating marshmallows and having a few drinks around the campfire and stargazing.

We woke up on day 2 and after breakfast, we piled into the cars and set off for Eli Creek. We spent a relaxing couple of hours floating down the creek and sunbathing. We went back to camp for lunch and then set off for the Champagne Pools. We spent the afternoon swimming and jumping in the pools as the waves crashed around us. As we walked back to the car, we saw a whale breach just off the beach and an Eagle Ray swimming in one of the pools (not one we’d been swimming in though sadly). As we were driving back to camp, another whale breached just beyond the breaking waves. Back at camp, we had another delicious dinner and again we sat round the campfire enjoying some drinks and marshmallows.

Day 3 began with me helping cook breakfast for everyone. Toast, bacon, sausages, hash browns and beans, yummy! After breakfast, we packed up camp and put everything in the trailer. We set off for Lake Mackenzie, where we spent an hour swimming in the crystal clear blue freshwater lake and sunbathing on the whitest sand. We got back in the cars and headed to our lunch stop at Central Station. After lunch, we went for a quick walk along the creek before getting back in the cars. We drove back to the ferry and back to Pippies Beachhouse.

3 very full on, very fun days with a lot of adrenaline and picturesque spots. It was time for a quick rest before heading off on the next adventure.

This blog is dedicated to Car 3 (and of course everyone else)! I can’t believe how much we all bonded and I think I have made friends for life on this trip. Thank you all for making this trip so awesome!
