Ahoy there! I spent 2 days and 2 nights on board OzSail’s trimaran Avatar sailing around the incredible Whitsundays.
We met at Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach. We filled out the relevant paperwork and were given our stinger suits. When everyone was ready, we headed down the pontoon to Avatar. After our safety briefing, we set sail. It took around 2 hours to sail out to the islands and our first snorkelling spot of the trip, Stonehaven Bay. The coral was not as dense as I expected and there wasn’t a huge amount of fish but it was building to the beauty of other snorkel spots. Not complaining at all, if you know me, you know I’m happy just being in the water! We left Stonehaven Bay and sailed to our first overnight mooring at Hook Passage. Our boat mum, Ellen, cooked us an amazing dinner before we all chilled on deck and met the resident juvenile bull sharks.
We woke early on day 2, chilling on deck as the sun rose and we set sail. We moored at Tongue Bay and the dingy dropped us off on the beach. We were on Whitsunday Island. We walked up to the lookout points to see the famous Whitehaven Beach. Words cannot describe how insanely blue the water was or how ridiculously white the sand was. After taking in the absolutely stunning views, we went down to the beach below to top up our tan. We were back on board for lunchtime and then set sail for our first snorkelling spot of the day, Cataran Bay. Cataran Bay was one of the most beautiful snorkelling spots I’ve ever been to. So much coral, so much colour, so many fish. Our second snorkel spot of the day was Mantaray Bay where we met a friendly Humphead Maori Wrasse called George. By the end of the day, we were all pretty tired. We chilled on deck watching the sun set, had another yummy dinner and then we were all ready to pass out for the night.
Another early start as we set sail back to Coral Sea Marina as our sailing adventure came to an end. I had so much fun on this trip, it was really full on and tiring but it was awesome!
