The Return to Australia

Sydney Harbour

I’m back!!

I have finally, after what felt like a million years, returned to Australia and I am so glad to be back!

If you haven’t read about my journey back to Oz via Singapore, go read that blog now…

What have I missed since I’ve been home?

  • TimTams – If you haven’t tried TimTams, you are seriously missing out. They are superior penguin biscuits and they are delicious!

  • The sun and the heat – heatwave (and threat to life warning) aside, I have missed it being so much sunnier and warmer than back home. I arrived back in October when it was just coming into spring. Now summer is fast approaching, and the weather is only going to get better!

  • Trivia nights – the quiz queen has well and truly returned!

  • The beaches – enough said really. You can take the girl off the island but you can’t take the island away from the girl… I need to be within reach of the sea…

  • Kmart – the Aussie version of Primark, I just love it!

  • Good transport links – buses, light rail (trams), trains and ferries… in Sydney, you are spoilt for choice on transport. It’s so easy to get around the city and further afield.

  • My amazing friends – most of all, I have missed the incredible friends!

What have I been up to?

  • Within a few days of arriving back in Sydney, I managed to find a sublet on a facebook group for backpackers. This gave me a place to be settled for a few weeks while I tried to find work and somewhere more permanent to live. It also gave me a base in the centre of the city so I was in easy reach of meeting up with friends.

  • I’ve caught up with my Aussie friends and it has been so good to be reunited with them after almost 2 years apart. Beyond that, I met up with an old school friend from Jersey that I don’t think I’ve seen for nearly a decade! Since then, I’ve met a number of other Jersey people proving that the world is much smaller and better connected than you think.

  • I’ve been to the beach several times (of course!). I’ve seen my first shark sighting sign, seen lots of bluebottles (also known as Portuguese Man O’ War jellyfish) washed up on the shore, and walked the coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee twice including during Sculptures by the Sea which was awesome.

  • I went whale watching with Fantasea Cruises and had one of the most exhilirating days out. We were joined by maybe 20 individual Humpback Whales, including a few juveniles, as they swam south on their migration back to Antarctica. Fantastic!

  • My friends and I reclaimed our crown at trivia night. So good to have a social life again!

  • Stumbled upon the Wicked movie premiere which was crazy! I watched the stars arrive on the makeshift yellow brick road for the world premiere of Wicked. I’ve also now seen the movie and it is beyond fantastic and you HAVE to go see it if you haven’t already.

  • I’ve moved into an apartment with a friend. We’re near to Bondi, around 15 minutes from the beach, and around 10 minutes from the CBD which is perfect for work. It’s so good to be unpacked and settled into my Aussie life again.

  • I started working back at SeaLife Sydney Aquarium as a Guest Experience Host (the same job I had last time). It’s FINtastic to be back in such a fun job and seeing all the animals! It’s also meant reconnecting with friends from last time and making new friends which has been awesome!

What next?

  • Christmas and New Year are coming up so that means markets, festivities and fireworks. I am working Christmas Day and New Year’s Day but that’s fine, you’ll find me at the beach at all other times.

  • I’m also planning some adventures for 2025 including going cage diving with Great Whites (my favourite animal and a lifelong dream) so watch this space…
